The wide scope of this book covers topics ranging from The prevalence of the venous thromboembolism in each procedure and the risk factors to bear in mind in each one. The diagnosis and treatment of venous thromboembolism. The methods for thromboprophylaxis. Anaesthetic implications for thromboprophylaxis and, also, main implications of the application of antithrombotic protocols in the anaesthetic practice are covered. An approach based on dividing the orthopedic procedures according to their own thrombotic risk was used, thus providing seperate protocols for each thromboprophylaxis: high risk, day surgery procedures and “special” surgical procedures. Finally, we review the problems involving the perioperatory management of antiaggregated and anticoagulated patients, with a special part in hip fracture surgery. The multicisciplinary approach and contributions from a panel of expert international  authors have come together to create an excellent teaching rescource, and essential guid to improving the application of thromboprophylaxis in orthopedic surgery.
