520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc | "Drawing from the author's extensive clinical experience, this casebook is intended to offer reflections and a fresh perspective on how we assess, diagnose and ultimately treat young children thought to be autistic. Drawing inspiration from the creative psychological principles of Feuerstein in combination with the developmental play strategies of DIRFloortime, Dr. Levin Fox challenges what she perceives as the rampant over-diagnosis and misdiagnosis of autism, and the commonly accepted status of autism as an unchangeable trait. Chapters are an accessible mix of theoretical reflections and vivid case studies that argue and illustrate that qualitative assessment methods based on play have the power to yield a more accurate clinical understanding of a child's difficulties and strengths than conventional autism assessment methods based on identifying symptoms. This text will stimulate practitioners and students in the field of autism to seek and, in fact, to prize qualitative, functional understanding of each child's latent strengths rather than citing evident symptoms in order to clinch a diagnosis. Parents of children considered autistic will find renewed hope and strength from the encouraging and enlightening case stories"-- |
